After the SC upheld the death penalty awarded to the accused in the infamous bus burning incident that killed three college students in 2000,a court in Salem fixed October 8 as the date for hanging the three. The accused all cadres of Opposition AIADMK in turn initiated the process for seeking a presidential pardon.
C Raghavan,Additional District Sessions Judge,Salem district,communicated the date to the authorities at Vellore Central Prison on Tuesday,informing them that they may be hanged to death on October 8.
The apex court had dismissed the appeals filed by Nedunchezhian 41,a ward secretary of the party; Ravindran 44,secretary of local unit of MGR Forum; and Muniappan 52,a panchayat president,while describing their crime as brutal,diabolical,grotesque and cruel.
After being intimated about dismissal of their appeal on Wednesday,the three handed over their mercy petition to the jail superintendent of Vellore central prison,which will automatically stay the execution till the President takes a decision on their plea,sources said.
Senior AIADMK leader D Jayakumar and the party8217;s Rajya Sabha member P H Manoj Pandian,both advocates,met them at the prison on Wednesday,but refused to speak to the media waiting outside.
