Abhay Deol: Change is inevitable

Change has to happen. Its happening in theworld, world cinema, our culture, our psyche and our film industry too.

Change has to happen. Its happening in theworld, world cinema, our culture, our psyche and our film industry too. This is thanks to some ofour stars who havethe power to drive the industry in a certain direction. Aamir Khan is one such actor. He is a huge starand is slowly pushing not only himself, but inspiring other actors alsoin the direction of taking up new roles, and doing films with heavy content and originality. His home productions like Taare Zameen Par,Dhobi Ghat and Peepli Live and their acceptance by the audience is an indication of things to come. It8217;s slow, buta change with better roles and films isdefinitely happening.

While there is little doubt that some Indian stars are known abroad,I don8217;t see them getting global recognition as such. Atleast not in the near future. That8217;s because we dont make films with a universal appeal.

Why would the global audience embrace you when you don8217;t make movies to their taste?

They are not going to sit through a film which has music and dance,as they have theirown musicals for that.

A good example is Javier Bardem, the Spanish actor, who has made a mark in Hollywood and at an international level. Javier got work in a Hollywood film,Before Night Falls. He got picked up because the subject appealed to a larger audience. We don8217;t do thatas our films are made for our NRIs abroad and not for the non-Indians. And frankly,we shouldnt even care. We should be coming up with our own contentand stories that reflect our culture, not borrowing from the West.
