A cheaper Nobel?

Even the grand old prize is not exempt from the demands of austerity

Even the grand old prize is not exempt from the demands of austerity

For the first time in 63 years, the Nobel prize will be worth less in terms of money, not prestige. Trying to prudently manage its resources in these stressful times, the Nobel Foundation has slashed the cash award by a fifth,to 8 million Swedish krona about 1.1 million,or over Rs 63 crore. Alfred Nobels nine-million-dollar endowment is the steady wellspring for the Nobel prize, and the cash award comes from the interest,as well as from donations. On the occasions when no prize is given, the money flows back into the main fund. Given that the Nobel Foundation had much riding on the equity markets,it is directly exposed to the ongoing economic downturn the award of 10 million krona had,in recent years, exceeded the average return on the investment. This cut is meant to ensure than the cash prize remains sizeable and sustainable.

Most Nobel peace prize winners have used the money for their own various good works. Lech Walesa spent it on a national rebuilding fund,Al Gore put it into an Alliance for Climate Protection. Others have blithely blown the money for their own purposes. Literature awardee Sinclair Lewis told reporters: It will be used to help a deserving American writer and his family. Economist Franco Modigliani got himself a sailboat. Albert Einstein,in fact, bought his divorce with the Nobel prize money and his wife clearly had faith in him,to demand he sign the deal two years before hed actually won it.

Unlike the more lucrative X Prize, the Nobel doesnt spur new work,it rewards a glorious record. It is a career-capping bonus for most winners, who are unlikely to care about 2 million krona one way or the other. For the rest of us though, its depressing to watch austerity encroach even this one last, bountiful space.
