After a 24-year-old woman, who works as an orchestra dancer, was allegedly abducted and gangraped by six men in Bihar’s Purnea district on Saturday night, she managed to use the phone of one of the accused to call the police, leading to her rescue and the arrest of one of six accused, officers said.

The woman was allegedly abducted around 9 pm by two men in a car and taken nearly 25 km away to a godown. Four other men were already there.

The survivor told police that she was forced to consume alcohol and forced to dance, after which all six men raped her one after another. After the assault, five of them fled after locking her inside a room, while one man, purportedly intoxicated, fell asleep inside.

Taking advantage of the situation, the woman used the sleeping man’s phone to dial the emergency number — 112 — at around 12.15 am and inform police about the incident.

An officer said police reached the location soon after receiving the emergency call. “On receiving the Dial 112 information, police reached the address given by the woman. The door was locked from outside and was broken by police personnel to enter the godown,” the officer said.

According to the source, the survivor was found inside in a critical condition, while liquor bottles were scattered in the room. One man was found lying there in an intoxicated condition.

The injured woman was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Purnea, where her statement was recorded. Her medical examination is currently underway, police said.

The arrested accused was identified as Mohammad Junaid (35), a local resident. The car that was allegedly used in the crime was also seized, police said.

An officer said an FIR was registered on the basis of the survivor’s statement. “A case of abduction followed by gangrape has been registered against three named and three unidentified accused. All of them are residents of Dagarua,” he said, adding that raids are on to arrest the remaining five accused.

Purnea SP Sweety Sahrawat said police acted promptly after receiving the emergency call. Sahrawat said that apart from the arrested accused, the survivor named two others.

“During the investigation and questioning of the accused, facts related to human trafficking have also emerged, which are being probed. Action will be taken against all those found involved in human trafficking,” the SP said.
