A three-year-old girl was raped after being whisked away from the snuggle of her pregnant mother,who was sleeping on a hospital veranda,in Malappuram

A three-year-old girl was raped after being whisked away from the snuggle of her pregnant mother,who was sleeping on a hospital veranda,in Malappuram Tuesday night. The police have taken 14 persons into custody.

The critically ravaged girl,found abandoned in another building Wednesday morning,was rushed to medical college in Kozhikode,where she was subjected to emergency surgeries. The girl was in a state of shock.

The police said the girl used to sleep along with her homeless mother,who had migrated to Kerala from Tamil Nadu,on the veranda of government hospital in Tirur in the district.

On Wednesday morning,after the woman found her daughter missing,she complained to the police,indicating the involvement of a group of men who allegedly used to pester her during nights.

Doctors at the medical college said the girl was subjected to colostomy and perinoplasty,which lasted for more than two hours. Her anus and rectum had suffered damaged in the assault. Besides,she had injuries and bruises on several parts of her body. Although in critical stage,she is responding to the medicines. Another surgery has to be performed after two weeks,hospital sources said.

State Women Commission chairperson K C Rosakutty said the commission would draw up a plan for the safety of women sleeping on the streets and verandas. The assaulted girl and her mother would be given special attention. The government would be asked to rehabilitate them,she said.
