KERALA police on Tuesday arrested two youths, who were working as pest control staff at the Poovar Island Resort,in connection with the alleged rape of an IT professional from Bangalore last week. The island resort is 30 km from here.
The two accused were identified as Luckynath (20) and Personagam (22),natives of Jorhat district in Assam. While police said the two were in the list of staff at the resort, the hotel management said they were not their employees but were supplied by Crows Pest Management Services from Kottayam.
The two were charged with Section 376 of IPC and would be produced before the court Wednesday.
The 40-year-old woman,a native of West Bengal, was allegedly raped early on November 28 at her cottage in the resort. She was among a group of 30 IT professionals who were at the resort for a meeting.
There was a party in the night and she danced there. Seeing the woman dancing, the youths thought she was in an inebriated state and wont much resistance. They removed the screw of the backdoor of the cottage and waited to enter the room until she slept. Since the door had a curtain, the woman did not notice the screws had been removed, a police source said.
While first accused Luckynath sexually assaulted the woman, second accused Personagam restrained her by pinning her down. However, the woman managed to wriggle out by kicking the person assaulting her.
The injuries suffered by the two men in the scuffle helped the police identify them, sources said.
Resort general manager Jayakumar said his hotel has little to do with the alleged accused. They were supplied by an agency. They were assigned to fog the rooms and clear premises of pests and bugs… However, they were staying at the hotel along with the staff. He said the retort management had fully co-operated with the police.
