MAHINDRA UNITED

Medical tests are mandatory. “Without it no contract is offered,” says manager Henry Menezes. Players undergo tests at Mahindras’ Occupation Health Centre at Kandivli. The tests are mostly pathological in nature and a medical card is maintained thereafter. ‘‘Being a corporate house we can afford to do it as we view a player as an employee who has to go through the pre-employment routine,” Menezes explains. These tests are usually done at the time of recruitment.

EAST BENGAL

It’s a two-phase system, says club vice-president Dr Shanti Dasgupta (also the official club doc). ‘‘Players are subjected to a general check-up before signing on, and later to a battery of specific tests for verification’’, he says. The club, he adds, has a separate medical budget and arrangements with members who also form part of the fraternity. Tests conducted vary from routine blood examination to tests to measure the player’s endurance levels.

Medical check-ups aren’t a big deal. ‘‘It’s ok with us since our contracts clearly have no claim-clause when it comes to players demanding medical assistance’’, says caretaker Joaquim Alemao. ‘‘Of course we do have a physio and some select doctors who we refer players to when injured but nothing such as player records in health. It’s a tight budget.’’
