Communications and IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to set up a task force to introduce high-speed trains like the Bullet trains of Japan and TGV of France in the Chenai-Bangalore-Hyderabad Sector.

Similar trains should be introduced in the Delhi-Chandigarh-Agra-Jaipur sector too, Maran said in a letter to the PM.

According to him, the current pace of development in IT can be retained only if there was corresponding development in infrastructure, especially transport.

‘‘To ensure that future generations of the country do not lag behind their counterparts in the rest of the world, the time has come for the introduction of high-speed trains in India,’’ a press release, quoting Maran’s letter, said.

Initially, the prototype of TGV trains can be considered and transfer of technology can be resorted to at a later date, said Maran, adding that high-speed trains could be run on dedicated tracks.

‘‘A step in this direction would boost the IT sector and also lay a strong foundation for the overall growth of the economy,’’ Maran said in the letter.
