The frosty relationship between Shane Warne and John Buchanan notwithstanding, the duo may have to work together as Cricket Australia is planning to appoint them as mentors.

“Looking back over the past 10 years, you could argue that Buchanan has been the most successful coach in the game at any level,” Cricket Australia (CA) spokesman Peter Young told the Daily Telegraph.

“And it’s the same with Shane Warne in terms of bowlers. So the thought of having them both work for us is salivating,” he added.

Young admitted that Warne and Buchanan’s rivalry, which became all the more bitter after the former issued acerbic statements on the ex-coach’s style of functioning, was an issue but he hoped that once appointed the duo will put its differences aside to work as professionals.

“While they have different ideas we don’t expect there to be any problems. I think they even shared a tent together at one of those boot camps.”

However, going by Warne’s latest salvo, in which he described Buchanan as a ‘goose living in pixieland’, it would be hard to imagine them working together.

“We don’t even know yet if they’ll be expected to exactly work together. But we already have John employed in a mentoring role with us, working with the coaches – and we hope to announce Shane in a similar role within weeks,” Young said.
