Since the rains began, villagers of Maval taluka, about 50 km from Pune, have been wading through half a kilometre of swirling, chest-high waters to reach Kamshet, the nearest town, to meet daily needs or carry on their work. With the river Indrayani in spate, nearly 6,000 people of 25 villages in the taluka have been cut off from Kamshet. If they don8217;t wade through the river, they will have to travel 60 km to reach the next nearest town, Talegaon. Police sub-inspector Balkrishna Sawant at Kamshet village said they had been appealing to the public not to take such risks, but they were not heeding the warning.
