In India, though bariatric surgeries are becoming increasingly popular, they are conducted only in cases of obesity. But doctors admit that they too, have observed similar results so far as obese diabetic patients are concerned.

Dr Anoop Misra, Director and Head of the Department, Diabetes and Metabolism, Fortis Hospitals, said in India, the bariatric surgery can only be conducted on people with a Body Mass Index of 35 and above.

In the US, where this surgery has been conducted on thinner people 8212; with BMI below 30 8212; for diabetes, the long-term effects are yet to be determined.

Even if this surgery becomes a viable solution for diabetes, it will take at least five years for all the necessary clearances in India, said Dr Ashish Vashisht, Senior Consultant, Surgery, Max Healthcare.
