SIT formed for probe into home guard’s death in Bengal police quarters; family lodges complaint against sub-inspector of the station

The police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death of a Home Guard attached to the Canning Police Station. The six-member investigation team will be headed by Rupantar Sengupta, the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of the Baruipur police.

On Monday, the district police announced the SIT. They stated that the allegations are being thoroughly examined and that no further comments can be made at this stage.

Sayan Bhattacharya, a Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Canning police station has been accused of being involved in the incident, sources said.

The body of Guljan Parveen Molla alias Reshmi, 22, was recovered from the police quarters of Canning police station on Sunday, leading the victim’s family to lodge a murder complaint against a Sub-Inspector (SI) of the same station.

She was employed at the Canning Police Station in South 24 Parganas. A resident of the Moukhali area under Jibantala police station, she lived in the Canning police quarters due to her work.

According to a police source, on Friday, she suddenly left her duty and went to the quarters behind the Canning police station. She did not return to the station.

Meanwhile, her family tried repeatedly contacting her, following which they contacted her workplace. Rashmi’s sister, Ruksana Khatun, went directly to the quarters, where she found the body, a police official said. Police from Canning station arrived at the scene and then sent the body for a post-mortem examination.

Police said the investigation is underway.

The deceased’s father, Rashid Mollah, was a TMC (Trinamool Congress) worker. He was murdered in Bhangar two years ago during the Panchayat elections. Following that, Rashid’s eldest daughter was given a job as a Home Guard.
