Vashisti Detergents Limited VDL , was incorporated in 1988 as Tata Vashisti Detergents, jointly by Tomco and Maharashtra Petroleum Corporation to manufacture toileteries, soaps, detergent cakes and powders, fatty acids, linear alkyl benzene, sulphorates and alpha olefin sulphorates.

It acquired its present name in December,1994 when Hinfustan Lever td HLL took over Tomco and annexed the latters stake in the company. On the financial front, the companys performance has been dismal.During 1995-96,the company posted sales and a net loss of Rs 60.13 crore and Rs 14.75 crore respectively. A further loss was posted during the first half of 1996-97 amounting to Rs 4.30 crore, while sales stood at Rs 55 crore.

In September 1995 the company was referred to the BIFR , and after its take over ,HLL formulated a revival scheme . Following this the company made a rights issue in October 1996 aggregating Rs 55 crore. The proceeds therefrom was utilized to settle institutional dues and meet working capital. Notably, HLL8217;s post rights issue stake was nearly 33 percent, and VDL will manufacture some of HLL8217;s renowned brands like Liril, Lux etc RATIONALE: VDL will manufacture many of HLL8217;s brands and since HLL8217;s existing capacities are not sufficient to cater to its burgeoning demand, this could prove beneficial for VDL .The projected growth rate in the toileteries segment too augurs well for the company. Therefore, irrespective of its losses, it is worth holding onto VDL , which is bound to grow in the shadow of HLL.
