
Judgment in VMC case likely today
The judgment in the contempt case lodged against the Vadodara Municipal Corporation for allegedly ignoring a stay order while demolishing 130 cabins in Lehripura in August 1997 is likely to be delivered in the Gujarat High Court on Tuesday. The case was filed by the Sindhi cabinwallas.
Excise raids
Central Excise Commissionerate officials raided the Bajwa offices of a valve-manufacturing company three days ago and detected evasion of central excise levy worth several lakhs of rupees. The company, which is reportedly owned by an influential BJP leader, supplied products to Indian Oil Corporation and other Central government undertakings. While the company claimed full excise tax from its clients, it did not show the equivalent amount in its accounts, a spokesman of the Central Excise Department said.
Delay rapped
Former councillor Chandrakumar Pillay has criticised the Vadodara Municipal Corporation8217;s 8220;delay8221; in accepting a Lakhanpal National Limited proposal to put up Rs 20 lakhs for a traffic island near the Makarpura GIDC. In a statement on Monday, he said that the proposal had been made on July 10, 1998.
BNWA election
Mohan Nair has been re-elected president of the Baroda Nair Welfare Association; this will be his fifth term as Association president. At a meeting held on Sunday, Vikraman Nair was elected vice-president, K P V Nair honorary secretary, Shailesh Nair and Vasudevan Nair joint secretaries, Vishwanathan Pillai honorary treasurer and Rajendran Nair convener. The BNWA has cancelled its Onam celebration as a tribute to Kargil martyrs and decided to send the amount saved to Central Soldier8217;s Fund through The Indian Express.
Meeting called
Vadodara Labour Court Practitioners8217; Association member Atul Trivedi has convened a meeting of labour advocates in the labour court at 12 noon on Tuesday to discuss the recent assault on senior advocate H M Pathan by trade union leaders in court premises.
