Officials8217; visit
A team of senior officials from the Gujarat Finance Commission will be in Vadodara on Tuesday to hear suggestions from the public on improving financial conditions in municipal corporations in the State. They will meet the people at 5.30 pm in the Sir Sayajirao Conference Hall in the Vadodara Municipal Corporation, according to an official VMC statement issued here on Sunday.

Contest for kids
A bell Classic Child contest was organised by Bell Ceramics Limited here on Sunday. As many as 1,000 children from various parts of the city participated in the contest, held to select child models for the advertising campaign for their new range of tiles.

Appointments
Kiran Raj, Naval Bajaj, Mahesh Mistry and Nitin Shah have been elected vice-presidents of the city unit of the Youth Congress. The appointments were made by State Youth Congress Chief Himmatsinh Patel.

Imprisonment
Special Judge B K Mali recently sentenced deputy engineer of the Gujarat Electricity Board8217;s Sankheda sub-station Paresh Mehta to one year imprisonment for accepting a bribe of Rs 200. Mehta has been also fined Rs 2,000. Mehta was arrested by the ACB of Vadodara on December 22, 1992 from Pipalsar, Sankheda following a complaint by Dahyabhai Mathurbhai Parmar. Parmar had applied for an electricity connection in 1990. However, due to some official objection, he demanded that the amount paid by him to the GEB be returned. Mehta asked for Rs 200 to return the money at the earliest. He was later trapped in the ACB net.

Office-bearers
D B Trivedi, V H Dave and N D Vyas have been elected as the chairman, vice- chairman and honorary secretary respectively of the Indian Institute of Materials Management. K P Vala was elected honorary treasurer, while five others were elected members of the branch committee.

Song contest
Students of the Shaishav School bagged the Samutkarsh trophy in a patriotic song competition organised by the Bharatiya Vikas Parishad recently. The students have won this trophy for the third consecutive time. Navrachana winsn NAVRACHANA school won the interschool environmental quiz competition organised by SOCLEEN recently. The runners up of the contest were Rosary school. The prizes were distributed by Additional Commissioner of Police M K Tandon.

Public meeting
Former general secretary of the Bharatiya Telephone Employees Union Line Staff amp; Class IV and present secretary of the Akhil Bharatiya Sanghatan Brijesh Kumar Upadhyaya and Circle Secretary Jeevabhai Rathod will visit the city on Monday and address a public meeting at the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh office, Kothi, at 2.30 pm. Upadhyaya will apprise the gathering on how to prevent the Department of Telecom from becoming a corporation, the problems employees were likely to face if DoT did become a corporation and what the government stood to gain or lose following the move.
