
Iran8217;s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Sunday the United States will not achieve its goals in the region, state television reported. 8220;Realities in the region show that the arrogant front, headed by US and its allies, will be the principal loser in the region,8221; the broadcast quoted Khamenei as saying in meeting Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Assad left Iran on Sunday after a two-day visit to discuss Iraq and other regional issues with senior Iranian officials, including Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
During his visit, Assad accused the US and Israel of trying to harm the regional positions of Iran and Syria by raising questions about their roles in Iraq, Lebanon, and Palestine. 8220;Through effort and coordination, we have to enlighten public opinion about the ominous aims of the US and Zionists,8221; said Assad, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
Ahmadinejad expressed similar concerns when he accused the US and Israel of targeting Islamic countries under the pretense of achieving peace. 8220;They imply that they are pursuing peace and security in the region, however they want to improve their and the Zionists8217; position in the region and hit Islamic countries,8221; saidAhmadinejad.
The US has accused Syria of not doing enough to prevent militants from crossing its border into Iraq and has blamed Iran for supporting Shi8217;ite militias in attacks that have killed American troops.
Tehran calls Pakistan envoy over blasts
Tehran: Iran today said it had summoned the Pakistani ambassador following two bomb blasts in its southeastern border city of Zahedan, one of which killed 11 elite Revolutionary Guards.
After the meeting with ambassador Shafkat Saeed, the two countries resolved to form a committee to improve security over their shared borders, foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said according to the state-run IRNA news agency.
