
HYDERABAD, AUG 1: In a significant breakthrough, the Hyderabad-based Atomic Minerals Directorate AMD, a major unit of the Department of Atomic Energy, has discovered uranium in Himachal Pradesh.
AMD director D C Banerjee said the AMD team of scientists, during a survey, found uranium mineralisation in Solan and Sirmur districts of Himachal Pradesh.He said detailed exploration would be carried out soon in that region for reserve estimation of the mineral.
The AMD would intensify exploration at Bhima basin in Gulbargah district Karnataka, Cuddapah Andhra Pradesh and Wakhyn in West Khasi hills district Meghalaya where the directorate was quite optimistic to strike high grade uranium deposits.
However, the progress of exploration in a highly promising area in Nalgonda district of AP was slowed down as a result of environmental issues, he added. India being one of the few countries in the world with large deposits of thorium ore, the AMD8217;s Exploration strategies towards discovering and evaluatingmore monazite deposits would be changed.
