
PUNE, June 10: Extending the nuclear power programme would require upgrading of safety measures to international standards, said Dr Unmesh Mishra, director, Health, Safety amp; Environment Group at Bhaba Atomic Research Centre. He was speaking on nuclear power plants safety at a lecture jointly organised by the Institution of Engineers, Indian Environmental Association and the Indian Water Works Association on Wednesday.
Mishra took a review of the safety measures in operation at various nuclear plants for producing electricity. According to Mishra, the Indian nuclear energy programme had demonstrated over decades that radiation hazards could be well managed and kept under control in conformity with the best practices in the world.
Noted environmentalist Prof S K Gajendragadkar also spoke.
