UP RS polls: all 10 candidates elected unopposed

Ten candidates, who had filed their nomination papers against the 10 vacancies in the Rajya Sabha, were on Friday declared elected unopposed. They include six candidates of the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party, two of the Samajwadi Party, one of the Bharatiya Janata Party and one independent candidate jointly supported by the Congress and the Samajwadi Party.

The formal announcement to this effect was made by the Returning Officer and the Principal Secretary of UP Assembly, Pradeep Dubey. Friday was the last date for withdrawal of the nominations. Since there were only 10 nominations for as many seats to the biennial RS polls, the election, scheduled on November 21, was not required.

The candidates who have made it to the Upper House of Parliament for a six-year term are BSP8217;s Akhilesh Das, Veer Singh, Brajesh Pathak, Avtar Singh Karimpuri, Rajaram and Brijlal Khaabari; SP8217;s Amar Singh and Ram Gopal Yadav; BJP8217;s Kusum Rai and Congress-SP joint candidate Mohammad Adeeb.

Compared to its tally of three last term, the BSP has sent six candidates thsi time. SP8217;s tally last time was four. For Kusum Rai, Mohammad Adib, Brijesh Pathak, Avatar Singh Karimpuri and Brijlal Khaabri it will be their first-time entry into the Rajya Sabha.

The Rajya Sabha members, whose term ends on November 25, are BJP president Rajnath Singh, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Amar Singh, Shahid Siddiqui, Abu Asim Azmi and Uday Pratap Singh all SP, Veer Singh, Isam Singh and Gandhi Azad both BSP and Akhilesh Das Congress.
