In another case of drunken driving involving VIP children, Kashif Abbas, the son of Uttar Pradesh MLA Shadab Fatima, allegedly mowed down four persons and injured five others sleeping on a pavement here late on Friday night.

The 19-year-old son of Samajwadi Party MLA Shadab Fatima, who is also chairperson of UP Upbhokta Sahkari Sangh, was reportedly driving the red beacon-fitted Tata Safari in a drunken state. He has been sent to 14-day judicial custody. Doctors at CSSMU8217;s Trauma Centre stated the condition of the injured was stable.

After losing control of the vehicle, Abbas, a BBA student, knocked down two motorcyclists and then ran over seven pavement dwellers near Parivartan Chowk under Hazratganj police circle. The car hit a paan shop before ramming into the pavement. Police arrested Abbas when he was trying to flee, and rushed the injured to CSSMU8217;s trauma centre. On Saturday morning, one of the six injured died.

The police have booked Abbas, whose father Naseem Haider is an executive engineer in Public Works Department, under various sections of the IPC, including culpable homicide and forgery.

Additional Superintendent of Police East Harish Kumar said the boy was driving under the influence of alcohol and had no driving licence. He also failed to show the required documents of the vehicle.

8220;Beer bottles have been seized from the car. The medical examination has confirmed that he had consumed it. Strict legal action will be taken against all accompanying him,8221; UP DGP Vikram Singh told reporters here.

Assistant Prosecuting Officer AK Kapoor said they had submitted an application in the court requesting registration of a case under Section 302 of the IPC murder. 8220;I submitted an application on the basis of FIR which states that the complainant had asked the accused to stop the vehicle after it had hit two motorcyclists. Abbas was told some people were sleeping on the pavement but he did not stop the vehicle and crushed them. The FIR suggests that the accused had deliberately run over the pavement dwellers,8221; said Kapoor.

The matter will come up for hearing on April 29. A sizeable number of youth from high-profile families have been involved in similar cases.
