TOKYO, June 28: Typhoon Peter brought strong winds and heavy rain to western Japan yesterday, causing authorities to warn of possible flooding and landslides as the storm prepared to move across a wide swath of the country.

The typhoon, which came ashore near Nagasaki today morning, paralysed much of the island of Kyushu, causing flights and ferries connecting it with other parts of Japan to be cancelled.

Winds with gusts up to 108 km per hour were kicked up by the medium-sized typhoon, the meteorological agency said. But that was considerably weaker than gusts of up to 155 km per hour recorded on Friday morning when the typhoon passed through the southern island of Okinawa on its way north.

Police in Oita and Nagasaki prefectures reported landslides resulting from the heavy rain, though damage was light.

Peter marked the first time two typhoons have been recorded coming ashore on Japan8217;s main islands in the month of June since the agency began keeping records in 1951, a spokesman said.

Typhoon Opal hit parts of the country earlier in the month.By mid-afternoon Typhoon Peter was located north of the Kyushu city of Oita, located 808 km south-west of Tokyo. Winds were gusting up to 90 km per hour, the agency said.
