CHANDIGARH, Nov 17: One course and two sets of rules. One set ensures the degree in a year and the other leads to the extension of the course by one year.
Students of M.Ed at the Punjab University are facing this dilemma. Those studying the course through the department of correspondence courses complete it in a year, while those who take the regular course finish the course in nearly two years.
The university degree is however the same, and the job potential of the course is also similar. quot;A student of the Department of Correspondence gets job a year earlier than we do and we loose one year in the process, quot; complains a student of the Education Department. This situation is a result of the university rule which makes it mandatory for all the students of the Department of Education to submit their dissertation.
The president of the Punjab University Campus Students Council Dayal Partap Singh Randhawa says that an analysis of the result over the past five years revealed that all the students had to spend an extra six months to one year to submit their dissertation. The students of the correspondence course complete the course in a year.
quot; Some students are not interested in research and hence the dissertation is not of much use to themquot; says Akhil Goyal, secretary of the Students Council. The university teachers are, however, of the opinion that the dissertation only helps students to secure more marks. The students are now on strike and till a settlement is reached, the dual rule would continue.
