Missing for over 15 months now, possibly dead. That seems to sum up the story of 45-year-old Kausar Shahmohammed Shaikh and 18-year-old worker Arshad alias Lula Haroon Shaikh, both of who reportedly went missing in the Best Bakery carnage.

And even as 21 accused in the case were acquitted by a fast-track court today, police are yet to determine whether the two were killed or are still missing.

Till now, their relatives are yet to receive any compensation. ‘‘The two missing persons are probably dead. The bones recovered from the oven of the bakery could have been theirs,’’ said an official who has been associated with the probe since the beginning.

Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Sinha admits: ‘‘Circumstantial evidence indicates the charred bones possibly belonged to the two missing persons.’’ But he added that there was no conclusive and scientific evidence to prove this. Both men worked at the bakery.

The official said final report about the two missing persons was submitted to the court after the Forensic Science Laboratory failed to conduct a DNA test on the charred remains.
