NEW DELHI, January 29: A sessions judge today convicted two of the six accused in a 12-year-old murder case. Daya Singh and Traffic Head Constable Randhir Singh have been sentenced to life imprisonment and told to pay a fine of Rs 2,000 each. They have also been directed to undergo imprisonment and pay a fine for attempt to murder.

One of the accused, Ved Prakash, died during the trial. The rest — Harish Chand, Ram Kumar and Vijay Kumar — have been sentenced to one month simple imprisonment for causing hurt and ordered to pay a fine of Rs 500 each.

According to the prosecution case, which dates back to July 24, 1986, the six accused entered into an argument with the victim, Dharamvir, over a crane. The accused forced Dharamvir to let them park a crane in front of his shop in Ashok Vihar. Harish Chand, the crane driver, came down and abused Dharamvir. Accused Randhir Singh attacked Dharamvir while the rest continued to abuse him. He was hit with a shovel. Thereafter he died on way to the hospital. According to medical reports, he died due to hemorrhage from injuries.

The accused also attacked passersby — Pratap Singh, Rajender and Rajesh. One of the accused, Daya Singh stabbed Rajesh.

While five of them were arrested on the same day, Daya Singh surrendered in the court on September 6, 1986. The prosecution produced 26 witnesses during the trial proceedings. Additional Sessions Judge Raghubir Singh held all the six guilty for causing grievous injury with common intention.
