CHANDIGARH, Sept 5: Twenty-seven persons were held for allegedly transporting people to the place of elections and their vehicles impounded while one person was arrested for impersonation during the Lok Sabha elections here today.

Police sources said that Taj Mohammad of Manimajra was arrested when he allegedly attempted to vote for another Manimajra resident, K.S. Khan in a polling booth in Mauli Jagran. The police have registered a case under Section 171-F of Indian Penal Code for personating at an election.

A couple of other persons were also detained for suspected impersonation. However they were let off after they were found "innocent".

Meanwhile, the police have impounded 24 vehicles and three cycle-rickshaws in which the voters were being carried to the polling centres. Their drivers have been arrested under Section 133 of the Representation of the People Act 1951 and Section 188 of Indian Penal Code for violating instructions issued by the Deputy Magistrate in this regard.

Those arrested include Sukhwinder Singh, Ashok Kumar, Balbir Singh, Vir Singh, Jagdev Singh, Vikas, Charan, Naveen Sahai, Rajesh Kumar, Sushil Kumar and Gursharan Singh (all in Sector 39 police station), Sharda Chand, Bhagwant Singh, Pardeep Kumar and Manjit Singh (in Sector 36 police station), Amar Singh and Charanjit Singh (in sector 31 police station), Riki Raj, Ranjit Singh, Pritam Singh, Dinesh Katyal, Sunil Chand and Ram Bilas (in Industrial area police station).

The vehicles impounded include seven auto-rickshaws, six Maruti vans, four jeeps, four Tata Sumos, two cars, and a tata 407.

Meanwhile, minor alterations were reported from Colony number 4, Colony Number 5 and Mauli Jagran with the respective police stations asking for more force. However, the situation soon returned to normal at these places with no untoward incident taking place.
