AHMEDABAD, AUG 18: Within days after the first National Ranking tournament applying new eligibility dates for age-group events concluded at Rajkot, the Table Tennis Federation of India TTFI has withdrawn the July 27 directive following protests from several state associations who had already gone through half their seasons with the old rule in force.
Thirty-one junior, sub-junior and cadet players were disqualified in Rajkot during the National Ranking Table Tennis Championship West, held between August 10 and 14, as they were age-barred by the new cut-off date of July 1, and many others, who would be qualified by the old cut-off date to play their respective events, did not enter the fray.
An official fax received here on Friday informed that the decision has been reverted by the TTFI and the old cut-off date will apply in all the state and national ranking tournaments for the rest of the year.
But the reversal of the decision has now in turn left in the lurch those who suffered on account of the new cut-off date in the Rajkot tournament, as they were either disqualified or did not play on their own.
Three best performances for a player out of the five National Ranking Championships hold a lot of weightage for the purpose of national ranking as well as to be in the reckoning for the national team8217;s probables.
Dhanraj Choudhary said on phone from Ajmer that a decision, in light of points lost by players who could not or were not allowed play in Rajkot, on whether to now count the two beat performances only whould be taken later when the TTFI secretary MC Chouhan returns from abroad.
He however said it had become imperative to revert to the old rule as most of the states had complained that they had already conducted half their seasons by the old rule and it would be difficult for them to select their state teams if the new rule was applied mid-way through their seasons.
