SURAT, Jan 6: Ramesh Gamit, a resident of Rashmati village in Songadh taluka of the district, alleged today that he had been illegally detained and beaten by a pastor of a local church and seven others on January 3. He also alleged that the Songadh police did not register a complaint when he first approached them; a complaint was registered at the DSP8217;s office today.

Ramesh, who was accompanied by district BJP secretary Vasant Gamit, and presented before the DSP and reporters on Wednesday evening, said his ordeal began on the night of January 3 when the accused accosted him and tied him to a wooden mast. They beat him through the night and even threatened to kill him if he lodged a complaint. His complaint stated that he was assaulted because he refused to convert to Christianity.

Ramesh also alleged that when he went to the Songadh police station to file a complaint, the PSI sent two constables to the church and asked the pastor to lodge a complaint that Ramesh had attempted to set fire to the church.

However, deputy superintendent of police DySP M P Nakum told Express Newsline that a complaint was lodged at the Songadh police station on the same day that Gamit approached the police. He added that Ramesh Gamit could spell out only two of the eight names mentioned in the complaint.

Nakum also said that when he asked the BJP leader accompanying the complainant to his office why eight people had been named when the complainant could identify just two, he was told: 8220;Try to understand, this is a matter of religion.8221; In fact, Ramesh did very little talking at the press conference8217;; BJP district secretary Vasant Gamit and Jamunaben, who took Ramesh to Songadh police station, did most of the talking.
