Five commuters were injured after they were hit by an earthing strip while travelling on the footboard of a local train on Monday morning. According to the Western Railway authorities, three commuters suffered minor injuries while the other two were seriously injured. The accident occurred when the train was between Jogeeshwari and Andheri. An earthing strip hanging from a pole hit the commuters who were standing on the footboard.The victims who suffered minor injuries have been identified as Tahir Aliu Sheikh (23), Shyam Chandra Patel (22) Suhas Shinde (25) and those with serious injuries as Ajay Safaria (45) and Ankit Yadav (15). Shyam Sunder Gupta, CPRO, WR, said, “All the commuters, except Ankit Yadav, were admitted to Cooper Hospital. Yadav is under treatment at KEM Hospital. All the five commuters are out of danger.” Railways announced an ex-gratia of Rs 500 to those with minor injuries and Rs 5,000 to those with serious injuries.Gupta said, “A committee has been formed to inquire into the incident.” Suhas Shinde, who sustained a minor head injury, said, “When train left Jogeshwari, I stood on the footboard as I had to alight at Andheri. Suddenly, a strip hit my head and I fell inside the train.”
