VADODARA, June 23: In its ongoing drive against vehicles for not displaying Pollution Under Control PUC certificates and emitting more smoke than permissible, as many as 1,034 vehicles were fined during the last eight days and Rs 77,725 collected from them.

It came to light during the drive being carried out by the city traffic police in collaboration with the Regional Transport Office, the Forensic Science Laboratory, and the District Supply Department, that some autorickshaws were using kerosene, which causes more pollution, in place of petrol or diesel as fuel.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police Traffic M K Tandon, as many as 22 autorickshaws found using kerosene and adulterated fuel had been detained and a huge fine imposed on them so as to deter others from using kerosene. He said the idea was not to penalise drivers but to create awareness among them about the harm they were doing to the atmosphere by using adulterated fuel.

He said the drive would be expanded next week and 8220;correction points8221; for checking vehicles without PUC would be set up in Manjelpur and on Waghodia Road. He said that minor defects causing pollution were corrected on the spot and the vehicle owners were advised to get their vehicles repaired in case of any major problem.

More than 7,000 fancy registration number plates, displayed particularly on two wheelers, had been painted in normal Roman letters on the spot during a campaign against fancy number plates. The action against vehicles with fancy number plates had become necessary because such registration numbers were not legible and drivers could not be brought to book in case of accidents.
