NEW DELHI, DEC 7: India were placed with strong United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a tough Group 8 in the first round of Asian qualifiers for the 2002 football World Cup to be hosted jointly by Japan and Korea.

India, Yemen, Brunei and UAE will clash in a round robin format on home and away basis with the group winner advancing to the second round as per the draw finalised in Tokyo.

Forty Asian nations have been divided into 10 groups of four each for the preliminaries. The group winners will make it the second round of two groups of five each, the winners of which will make it to the 32-team finals, according to information received here today.

The two second round runners-up will play each other for the right to a two-leg play-off against a runner-up from European groups.

England and Germany have been put together in Group 9 of the European qualifiers with Greece, Finland and Albania. Holland also got a tough draw, clubbed with Ireland, Portugal, Cyprus, Andorra and Estonia.
