CHANDIGARH, Jan 24: A number of organisations and political parties have condemned the torching of an Australian missionary and his two sons in Orissa.

Terming the act quot;cowardlyquot;, the Punjab Istri Sabha said the action by Bajrang Dal activists was quot;shockingly gruesomequot;. Sabha president Oshima Raikhy, vice-president Sheela Didi and general secretary Mohinder Samber said that such a tragic incident was also against the spirit of Hinduism. They have called upon the BJP government to give stern punishment to the guilty to set an example.

The local units of the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, CPI and Samata Party have also condemned the incident and accused the BJP government of having failed to control the law and order situation in the country. Congress spokesman Sunil Parti said the prime minister was only providing lip service and had taken no action to arrest the Bajrang Dal activists. Local unit president of Samajwadi Party, Shivi Jaiswal, sought a ban on the Bajrang Dal and VHP, whom he blamed for the violent incidents.

In another release, local unit secretary of CPI, S L Bansal, said it was a result of the inability and mishandling on the part of the Union government. Local unit president of Samata Party, R.S. Dhaliwal, said that after the incident, the minorities were not feeling secure in the nation.
