Beijing, Jan 11: India has said the last week’s incident in which some Tibetan protesters stormed the Chinese embassy in New Delhi was `unfortunate’, diplomatic sources said here today.

“We condemn such illegal activities that undermine law and order as well as the safety and security of diplomatic premises and personnel,” a senior Indian diplomat said.

Diplomatic sources also confirmed that the Chinese foreign ministry had summoned the Indian Ambassador to China Vijay K Nambiar on Friday and lodged a strong protest over the incident and accused the Indian government of `failing’ to take adequate steps to prevent the incident.

Indian diplomatic sources said they have assured the Chinese that the Indian government attached greater importance to the security and normal functioning of all diplomatic missions in New Delhi.

“We have assured the Chinese side that New Delhi has taken all necessary and appropriate measures to prevent such incidents from recurring,” they said.

The sources also pointedout the strong condemnation of the incident by the Indian government on Friday in which New Delhi fully upheld the `principles’ of sanctity and inviolability of diplomatic premises.

Foreign ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao today told PTI the incident was a `serious anti-China event.’ `The Indian side has not taken measures to prevent it from happening,” he said.

By allowing the Tibetan protesters to break into the embassy premises, India has `broken’ its promise that it would not allow the pro-Tibet independence activists to carry out anti-China political activities from Indian soil, he said.

“This incident has seriously damaged China’s sovereignty,” Zhu said while urging the Indian government to prevent such incidents in future.
