VADODARA, April 1: Three personnel of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation VMC were suspended by Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria on Thursday on charges of fraud in levying Octroi duty from transporters of the Mangal Bazar area.

Ratilal Vasawa, Octroi Inspector, Deepak Tawde, a junior clerk, Chetan Pandya, clerk, were charged with meddling with computer records regarding octroi collections from transporters from the Mangal Bazaar area from October 1993 onwards.

While withholding the estimate of the fraud in figures, Aloria told reporters, 8220;Going by the fact that the activities of these employees were of criminal nature, we may even consider lodging a police case against them8221;. He also hinted that more people from the civic body were likely to be involved in the racket.

The inquiry, leading to the suspension of the three, was conducted by Deputy Municipal Commissioner General I B Peerzada and Assistant Municipal Commissioner R P Yagnik, following orders of Aloria.

Meanwhile, Aloria also announced that he would conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter of installation of street-lights in the city from the MLA and MP quota. Till date, the VMC has been footing the bill for such installations undertaken by the members of the Legislative Assembly and members of Parliament.

Members of the Opposition in the VMC had on Wednesday raised a noise over the matter questioning if the BPMC Act had any provision binding it to foot the bills on behalf of the MPs and MLAs. Aloria assured that he would conduct a thorough study of the BPMC provisions and arrive on a decision in the matter.

Closed-door meeting: A closed-door meeting between officials of the VMC and Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development, Manjula Subramanyam will be held at the Circuit House here on Friday at 11 am to discuss the expansion of the city limits. Highly placed civic sources said the meeting will be attended by Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria, Mayor Bharti Vyas and Deputy Mayor Dinesh Choksi.
