This French Jazz trio brings alive the sounds of the Mediterranean
Wherever the Titi Robin Trio musicians go, they spread the sounds of the Mediterranean. Earlier this week, the French jazz band stopped by the Lodhi Garden and for a few musical hours in the open-air venue, the crowd was transported into the heart of the Continent where the hills are alive with songs.
Organised by the Alliance Francaise, the musical evening was full of Flamenco rhythms, oriental melodies and haunting gypsy beats.
The troupe, comprising Titi Robin, 51, accordionist Francis Varis and percussionist Ze Luis Nascimiento, is on its maiden tour of India.
A self-taught musician whose Mediterranean sounds won him the 2008 BBC Radio awards for World Music, Robin says the trio8217;s uniqueness is due to the fact that 8220;we are free with each other. I don8217;t have to conduct my musicians, we are three solo artists playing music from our hearts.8221;
Though Robin mainly strums the guitar, he is also adept with the Bouzouki and the Oud 8212; Greek and Oriental versions of flutes.
The band also gave its audience a taste of India by improvising with two Indian classical musicians for the last piece. 8220;I have also performed with several Indian artistes such as tabla player Hameed Khan,8221; he says. 8220;And a Rajasthani snake charmer8217;s daughter first introduced me to Indian gypsy rhythms.8221;
