His party may be busy planning for polls but Union Textiles Minister Shahnawaz Hussain, Lok Sabha or no Lok Sabha, has a big party to organise: he’s got his staff working overtime for a mega fashion event beginning March 29. And the Ministry’s shopping for supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Jodi Kidd.
‘‘The idea is to lift this show above the ordinary,’’ Hussian told The Sunday Express today, ‘‘get in international designers and models and anything it takes to establish brand India in the global markets. Nothing about this show will be ordinary.’’
So for starters, the Ministry and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), which is organising the show, have hired Sydney-based Australian Fashion Innovators (AFI) for event management. Its brief: get the models, get the sponsors.
AFI’s the name behind the Mercedes Benz Sydney Fashion show and has been handling the Paris Fashion Show for over 10 years. CEO Simon Lock was in Delhi last month with marketing chief Jodi Pritchard to consult with Ministry officials.
When contacted in Sydney, Lock said: ‘‘The Indian event has the potential of being the largest event in the world as it is a very different concept and India is an attractive destination for the international world. But which models would finally be available for the event will depend on the budget we are given. Negotiations are on and all I can say is we are in touch with models like Claudia Schiffer and Jodi Kidd. We are waiting for a final picture on the resources available.’’
Ministry officials say the show plans to integrate the Indian supply chain starting from yarn manufacturers, fabric manufacturers, textile and fashion designers and showcase Indian expertise to overseas markets, including international buying houses.
The idea is to push textile and garment exports, currently at Rs 57,000 crore every year, especially in the value-added segments which constitute only a fraction of the earnings.
Says Gauri Kumar, NIFT Director General: ‘‘People are impressed with Indian fashions and designs abroad. And yet we have not integrated various segments of the industry and hence fail to realise the potential. This can only happen when we put together fabric sponsors, textile and fashion designers on a platform for a complete end-to-end chain.’’
Evidence of global interest in Indian fashion, says Kumar, is the fact that the International Federation of Fashion Institutes is holding its annual general meeting in India to coincide with the show.
The event will involve seminars, discussions as well as showcase collections of over 160 designers, both national and international. It will also have nine ramp shows, three per day.
