The way you wear your hair can sometimes be more revealing than the expression you carry on your face. In today’s times, making a strong fashion statement isn’t just about wearing the right clothes, it has to start with your hair! All the signposts for the future of hair point towards styles that are easy to wear and care for. City saloons unveil an array of hairstyles catching up this summer with the “hair endowed” sections.

“People of all age groups want cuts that reflect their attitude,” says Arshad Khan who runs Oleega. It is an era of easy maintenance, flattering soft steps that compliment the face and can be styled to create a variety of looks to suit you. In this summer of ’98, cuts are definitely going to be much stronger and shapes will take a far more classic line, making neat and precise the keywords. Styles that give the hair a lot of structure and shape yet let the the finish remain fluid and natural will be in vogue.

The look this season for the femme fatale is the razor cut, worn long or short, while the macho males sport an Italian cut, a close clone of the crop style. Different colours and textures are another way of adding to your wardrobe. This makes experimentation with fashion colours the talk of the town. Besides the natural colour, one could get raunchy with a rich shade of brown, mahogany or tones of earthy copper — the hottest colours the season has to offer. Short looks are boldly coloured, glossy and sculpted whereas medium length hair is dressed into definite shapes with vibrant copper and mahogany shades and longer hair is structured though free and alive with shine. The inspiration behind the men’s latest snazzy, jazzy and suave styles comes from the cute cuts of the Soccer stars of the World Cup ’98 to the hottest hairdos on the ramps. The women cadre look upto international models on glossy covers and the latest donned by the Bollywood bellesBut in spite of all the hoopla, the buzzword around the city is the “natural” look with minimum hassles. Says a college student, Afia Singh, “Perms are passe making way for coloured straight hair.” Deepa Arora, a middle-aged housewife feels that colouring among her age group is catching up. Her contemporary Sneh Popli from an advertising agency, however, wants “to age gracefully sans the use of colour”.

The cool dudes go in for looks that make them “feel different, look good and be cynosure of all starry-eyed gals”. Says another college student Rahul Verma, “I sport a hairstyle that my girlfriend suggests.” His college mates Sahil, Anant and Arjun portray a devil-may-care-attitude that reflects in their disheveled hairstyles. Apparently this summer men need smarten up, shape up and get in the groove with the look that’s sauve and compliments their individual style.

So for all you guys and gals out there, your hair may be long or short, whatever you choose, make sure you step out this season with a sensual hairstyle befitting your attitude.
