Prime Minister Manmohan Singh showed his firmness by refusing to accept a representation from the opposition leaders. His attempt to draw the line is welcome. The Opposition8217;s attitude in Parliament is adverse to our democratic values. They should behave properly and their conduct must rise to meet parliamentary standards.

Wishful thinking

8226; Apropos of your editorial 8216;Infrastructure is in8217; IE, August 26, have you no sense of proportion? Have you at last descended to plain wishful thinking? If infrastructure is in, how come the golden quadrilateral project is out? The one project that you thought indicated that India is serious about development.

Flag as front

8226; Hoisting the tricolor is surely not a crime. But the vital question is: Why does the BJP remember to do it only while it is in opposition and in states ruled by other parties? The real intent is to provoke communal strife. This is borne out by the choice of venues, which are invariably Muslim dominated. Thus it seeks to subtly question the whole community8217;s loyalty to the nation and usurp the right to patriotism. If BJP leaders are so fond of hoisting the tricolor, let them do it with grace at their party headquarters and leave the idgahs and masjids at peace.

Hooligan nation

8226; Why is it so difficult to instil discipline in this country? MPs shouting, medical staff leaving patients to suffer, and now lawyers demanding cancellation of the code of conduct. Is India a nation of hooligans? Is it surprising that investors avoid this country? The common man who wishes to do his job and improve his standard of living, the students who want to study and get ahead in life, and the working poor are all victims of this blatant hooliganism which is one of the major culprits deterring the country8217;s progress.

Foolish Congress

8226; This refers to 8216;BJP gets Uma giftwrapped in tricolour8217; IE, August 25. It was sheer foolishness on the part of Congress managers to use a decade old case against Uma Bharti to counter the Opposition onslaught on the issue of tainted ministers in the UPA government. The move has misfired and contrary to the Congress expectations that it would put the BJP on the defensive thereby making the agitation against UPA8217;s tainted ministers lose steam, Uma Bharti promptly resigned and proceeded to Bangalore to court arrest. After the Savarkar plaque issue, this is yet another issue that may adversely affect the Congress fortunes in the coming Maharashtra assembly elections. Congress must blame no one but itself.

People don8217;t count

8226; Indian politics is of the politicians for the politicians by the politicians. Let them be asked to produce a school certificate on good civic behaviour before standing for elections.
