PUNE, Nov 25: This is the last place that you would go to. Called the dead house, the Department of Forensics at Sassoon General Hospital is overburdened, thanks to the ongoing strike by resident doctors.
8220;We are under pressure, but services are on,8221; says Dr V V Wase, head of department. 8220;They have not collapsed and we will continue to work double shift if required,8221; he says, as bodies come in at regular intervals.
Things have not changed at this place. Sitting at a grim corner of the hospital campus, the dead house has been burdened for years.
Says another doctor of the department. 8220;We have to conduct post-mortems on nearly 10 to 12 bodies everyday. While there are other institutions around Pune which could give the same services, nobody has taken the initiative.8221;
Which has left the department catering to the whole district single-handedly. Other educational-cum-medical institutions do have the infrastructure to have their own departments who could conduct post-mortems but they have to apply first. Something, says the doctor, no institution is keen on doing.
The Armed Forces Medical College and the Bharti Vidyapeeth are some of the prominent hospitals which could go in for similar facilities provided they applied for the same. Meanwhile, at the dead house families had to wait for long to receive the deceased as the mandatory reports were delayed. Even the policemen who come in with accident victims complained of delays in getting the reports because of the strike. Three doctors out of a total staff strength of nine are on strike. The department has chalked out emergency duty charts specifically for the strike period and the doctors are hoping that it gets over soon.
