Western Railway (WR) had announced the cancellation of 102 local trains on Tuesday as part of the Borivali sixth line project
A planning lapse during works at the Kandivli car shed disrupted Western Railway’s suburban operations for two consecutive days, severely affecting commuters, with 102 local trains cancelled on Tuesday and 30 services withdrawn on Wednesday before gradual restoration began following an early-morning safety clearance.
Western Railway (WR) had announced the cancellation of 102 local trains on Tuesday as part of the Borivali sixth line project. However, delays in the works led to further cancellations on Wednesday.
The disruption followed the suspension of entry and exit at the south end of the Kandivli car shed after engineers failed to obtain a mandatory “line-fit” safety certificate for a newly built crossover, part of the sixth line project between Kandivli and Malad.
While WR had initially announced 102 cancellations for Wednesday as well, only 30 services were eventually withdrawn after the crossover received fitness certification around 5 am, allowing partial restoration of services later in the day.
Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Vineet Abhishek said the issue had been resolved early on Wednesday. “The crossover was certified fit at around 5 am and services were restored thereafter. There may have been some cancellations, but not 102 today. Most locals functioned,” he said.
However, commuters continued to face disruption during peak hours.
Rohit Mehta (36), who commutes daily from Andheri to Lower Parel, said, “I travel from Andheri to Lower Parel and work near Peninsula Corporate Park. Yesterday was even worse and today I am also late. My regular 8.26 am Borivali fast was cancelled and I had to travel in the very next train, which was extremely crowded, it was hard to breathe. Even yesterday evening, when I tried to return by a fast from Mumbai Central, trains were cancelled and I had to wait a long time just to board one.”
