While it is almost certain that Sachin Tendulkar will take over as India8217;s Test captain, it has now become clear why his name was not in the mix for the one-day captaincy. According to BCCI sources, Tendulkar is keen on being rested for a few matches over the next two months when India take on Australia and Pakistan in a set of 12 ODIs.
Tendulkar had recently admitted that he was finding it tough to recover between games in the cramped one-day scene. But the master batsman, as this newspaper reported yesterday, is gearing up for the Test captaincy after informing a top BCCI official that he is ready to take over from Rahul Dravid.
Apparently, Tendulkar will officially 8220;take up the position of Test skipper8221; when the selectors pick the team next month for the November home series against Pakistan. In fact, chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar said today that 8220;the Test series will be a far more tougher job to handle than the one-day department and the team will need experienced hands.8221;
Vengsarkar added that the 8220;selection committee was seriously planning on a rotation policy keeping in mind the busy schedule ahead and has decided to give the senior cricketers ample rest between matches during the two series.8221; Tendulkar, along with Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly, have been playing continuously since they left for Ireland in the second week of June.
