Seat-sharing for Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh is turning out to be more difficult than negotiations for Lok Sabha seats between the Congress and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS).
The TRS, which seeks to emerge as a regional force in the simultaneous elections to the Assembly and LS, wants to contest as many seats as it can. Though this has been reason for the deadlock, a decision is expected soon.
Congress sources said they want to give 30 seats of the 107 in Telangana to the TRS, while the Samiti wants 50. And 15-16 seats would be kept for the Left parties.
Of the 15 Lok Sabha seats, Congress wants to give two for the Left parties and one to the MIM. With this apportioning done, TRS wants to divide the remaining 12 seats evenly with the Congress. On the other hand, Congress wants to spare four or five seats and retain at least seven seats.
Telangana region has 10 districts and elects 15 MPs. In the recently-dissolved Lok Sabha, Congress has just five MPs from the state’s 42 LS constituencies. Of the 294 Assembly seats, 107 come under this region and the Congress has 41 MLAs from Telangana.
On seat-sharing, the state Congress leaders have remained tough anticipating a massive anti-incumbency factor against the Chandrababu Naidu government. And therefore, the APCC wants to get decisive numbers in the next Assembly, without having to depend on the TRS.
It is learnt, according to sources, that Ram Vilas Paswan of the Lok Janashakti Party is mediating between the Congress and the TRS on the issue.
