The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Election 2026 is expected to be a major political event in Maharashtra, as voters in Mumbai will elect corporators to govern India’s richest civic body. After three years without an elected civic body, the people of Mumbai will now choose their local representatives.
Here is everything you need to know about the BMC election 2026, including the schedule, voting dates, results timeline, and other important details.
Voting for the BMC election 2026 will be held on January 15 from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm across all 227 wards of Mumbai, the State Election Commission announced. The election will also cover 20 other municipal corporations in Maharashtra, making it one of the largest civic election exercises in the state.
The counting of votes for the BMC election 2026 will take place on January 16 from 10 am.
A total of 1,03,44,315 citizens are eligible to vote in the BMC polls, according to PTI. Out of these, 55,16,707 are male, 48,26,509 are female voters, and the number of Other voters stands at 1,099.
The State Election Commission has released the official schedule for the BMC election 2026. The election process will be conducted in multiple stages, starting with the issuance of the notification and concluding with the declaration of results.
Nomination filing begins: December 23, 2025
Last date for nominations: December 30, 2025
Scrutiny of nominations: December 31, 2025
Last date for withdrawal: January 2, 2026
BMC polling date 2026: January 15, 2026
Vote counting date: January 16, 2026
Total number of seats reserved for women (including women belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, and Backwards Class of Citizens): 114
Following the State Election Commission’s announcement of elections to 29 municipal corporations on Monday, December 15, 2025, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) was enforced with immediate effect.
The MCC will remain in force throughout the election process and will continue until the completion of vote counting on January 16, 2026. It will be lifted once the election results are formally declared.
