MUMBAI, AUG 10: Tata Electric Companies TEC is exploring opportunities to diversify into internet services and plans to give greater thrust to telecom sector. This was stated by Ratan Tata, chairman TEC here on Tuesday at the 90th annual general meeting of the company.
While the company has already made investment in the telecom sector through its group companies, investment in the internet business is yet to be initiated.
Apart from diversification, the company is also examining possibilities to enhance its presence in the power sector, including generation, transmission and distribution in Maharashtra and other states, he said.
This is needed because as a licensee TEC8217;s growth prospects are limited. The company that supplies power to bulk consumers, including BSES and BEST, is presently having surplus power both during peak and non-peak hours. This is primarily because BSES, which consumes over 30 per cent of TEC8217;s total generation, has reduced the purchase of power from the company since itstarted its own generation.
