The Congress Sunday announced it will hold a five-km padayatra in every constituency of Karnataka as part of its campaign against the repeal of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) with the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, or VB-G RAM G.

Following a meeting organised by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in Delhi over the issue, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who is also the chief of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, said that Congress workers would either gherao the Karnataka BJP headquarters or the Raj Bhavan on January 27.

Among those in attendance will be Randeep Singh Surjewala, AICC secretary in-charge of Karnataka. Indications are that AICC general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal will also participate, Shivakumar stated.

The Karnataka government “has already convened a special session to discuss the (repeal of) NREGA programme,” he further said.

Following a special Cabinet meeting, the Karnataka government has convened a joint legislature session from January 22 to 30, where a special discussion on the repeal of MGNREGA is scheduled.

Congress workers will take to the streets at the panchayat level to see that NREGA is implemented again, Shivakumar added.

Resolutions against the repeal will be passed at all panchayats of the state, he added.

Responding to a question on whether he had met any senior leaders of the party during the visit, Shivakumar – who is reportedly aspiring to be CM by replacing Siddaramaiah – said that he could not disclose who he had met. “We are politicians. We meet leaders of our party,” he said, adding, “Time will answer everything”.
