MUMBAI, Nov 19: The net profit of Tata Tea has increased by 43 per cent to Rs 50.31 crore during the six-month period ended September 1997 from Rs 35.30 crore in the same period of last year. The company had earned a net profit of Rs 58.62 crore during the full year ended March 1997.

The company’s total turnover during the period registered an increase of 42 per cent to Rs 458.15 crore from Rs 325.45 crore. Excluding the turnover on trade coffee, the company’s turnover on its main-line activities increased by 36 per cent. The total exports at Rs 182 crore increased by 73 per cent over the previous half year. On its core products, the company’s exports increased from Rs 23 crore to Rs 58 crore, an increase of 152 per cent.

The gross profit of the company has increased to Rs 72.69 crore from Rs 59.46 crore. The provision for taxation amounted to Rs 7.28 crore (Rs 5.49 crore) and for taxation to Rs 15.10 crore (Rs 18.67 crore).

“Tea prices both in the north and in the south have been firm in view of sustained export demand and continuing increase in domestic consumption. Barring unforeseen circumstances, the prospects for the current year are bright,” according to R K Krishna Kumar, vice chairman and managing director. While there was substantial increase in packet tea production, increase in production and sales of instant tea was spectacular. Production increased by over 1 million lbs upto end September. Major buyers of instant tea powders such as `Snapple’ have come back to Tata Tea for their total requirements, according a press release.
