Long rallies, plenty of winners and a baseline battle all the way 8211; that was how the ITF 10,000 final between Ankita Bhambri and Tara Iyer turned out. This match ended with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win for Tara, and provided great tennis at the Noida Stadium today.

It was Tara8217;s poor first serve that gave away plenty of points in the first set, and it was Ankita who pocketed this one 6-3. It looked as if a straight-set win was on the cards as Ankita broke in the second set to lead 4-3. But then, with defeat staring at her face, Tara bounced back. She broke straight back, and a game later, earned herself a set point with a winning return. It was now 6-4 to Tara, and a set apiece.

Both began the third set on a shaky note, but it was Tara who turned out stronger as it went on. After an exchange of breaks, Tara got a crucial break to lead 5-3. And then held her nerve to serve out the match. Ankita helped her cause by putting a backhand wide.

8220;My serve is definitely something I have to improve, but I am very happy to have won. Winning at home is particularly satisfying,8221; said Tara.

The 19-year-old is in good form ahead of next week8217;s tournament at the DLTA Complex in New Delhi, but her plans for the Asian Championships at Tashkent may go awry. She is currently in the qualifying draw as it was made before her recent points were updated, which means she will have to leave on Friday. 8220;Next week8217;s tournament ends on Saturday, and it could be a problem,8221; she said. She is attempting to get a wild card for the tournament, which begins on September 3.
