Venkatraman sisters lead mass exit of seeds

NEW DELHI, Oct 7: It was coming for a long time. Top-seeded Vasudeva Reddy, talented, temperamental and now suddenly grappling with extreme mood swings on the courts, joined the crowd in the galleries, crashing out to an unassuming journeyman from Rajasthan in three sets 3-6, 7-62, 6-2 in the second round of the DSCL National tennis championships at the Delhi Tennis Association courts here today.

For Jagdish Tanwar, who came through the 256 strong qualifying draw, there couln8217;t be a better moment, but Thursday morning is just a night away and with it will come Vijay Kannan, junior national champ, who now carries that extra tag of Davis Cup squad reserve. But these courts are home for Vijay, who8217;s having his best years under coach Balram Singh at the Dharam Hinduja tennis Academy here.

In fact, the day was quite a wonderful one for the coach, whose daughter, Shalini, pulled off a mild upset in the women8217;s event beating Mumbai8217;s Reetu Sethi 6-2, 6-4,and all his trainees had impressive wins.

But for the Venkatraman sisters from Bangalore, things couln8217;t have gotten any worse. Fourth seeded Archana8217;s waiting game just didn8217;t click against Shruti Dhawan, who set-up an interesting quarter-final clash with hard hitting Rushmi Chakravarty.

Eight-seeded Arthi Venkatraman made her exit faster than younger sister Archana with a 4-6, 5-7 scoreline agianst Bangalore youngster G Sheetal.
