Australian bowling coach Troy Cooley has warned against any drastic remedial work with paceman Shaun Tait, saying the young fast bowler had it in him to come back and make impact as cricket World Cup moves into more crucial phase.
Tait has defined himself as a destructive strike weapon for Australia over the past five weeks and trails only Glenn McGrath in wickets taken, with 16 victims at 22.12, but he faltered against Ireland and Sri Lanka.
8220;Shaun Tait has a great personality to take the knocks early and to come back. He doesn8217;t necessarily enjoy bowling the wides but I think if you look at his career he has had a few wayward patches and he comes back and has an impact,8221; Cooley said.
8220;He8217;s doing his job, and on a really good day you will see not only an improvement but a more consistent performance,8221; he added.
Cooley said not many changes could be advised to Tait as he was in the middle of a tournament, besides the bowler was already working on his assets.
8220;One big thing you8217;ve got to remember is you8217;re in the tournament and you8217;re not trying to rebuild a chassis in the middle of the tournament.
He has a number of unique assets that we don8217;t want to change and a few key things he is working on already,8221; he was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Cooley also said their injured bowler Shane Watson was progressing well and could be used as an option. 8220;We8217;re really pleased with the way he is progressing. He8217;s ticked one box, hopefully he will tick another one and then we can create another nightmare for the selectors,8221; he said.
Australian wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist echoed Cooley8217;s views on Tait8217;s expensive beginning to the Sri Lanka game, when his first two overs conceded 18 runs. He finished with 2-68 from 10 overs.
8220;Given his action and his whole style. I8217;m not sure how much fine-tuning you8217;re ever going to do with someone like that,8221; Gilchrist said.
8220;He8217;d love to be Mr Consistency like Glenn McGrath, just like we8217;d all like to be scoring runs like Ricky Ponting. But we8217;ve all got our individual traits and that8217;s what our bowling group has done well.
8220;The variety we8217;ve got has been utilised at different times and Tait has proven to be a key part of that set-up.8221;
