English to be compulsory in primary classes
Gandhinagar: The Keshubhai Patel Government has decided to make compulsory the teaching of English and its examination in Classes V, VI and VII in the government and private primary schools from the next academic year.

Doctors rally
Surat: Junior doctors, attached to the New Civil Hospital, took out a scooter procession on Thursday as part of their ongoing agitation to press the government for issuing a government resolution hiking their stipend. They started from the Surat Government Medical College campus and submitted a memorandum to the district collector. Interns and undergraduate students are also on strike. The agitating doctors will hold a 8220;havan8221; on Friday in front of the emergency department to protest against the delay.

Elected
Ramakant Shukla was elected president of the South Gujarat Insurance Pensioners8217; Association at its annual general meeting held on Wednesday. Manubhai Desai and Hasmukh Ghayal were elected vice-presidents, while Rashmi Desai was elected secretary.

Welfare scheme
The backward class welfare office of the Bardoli taluka of the district spent Rs 3.22 lakh on welfare schemes for the backward classes, a district administration release stated. The amount was spent for constructing houses, building community bathroons and toilets, and providing houseful utilities for the backward classes. Besides, drinking water failities were also provided in a number of schools.

Meeting
The District Co-ordination and Complaints Committee will be held at the collectorate at 11:30 am on September 19. District Collector R M Shah, in a release, said that those having any grievances and complaints should contact their respected elected represetatives, who would represent their problems at the meeting.

Garba contest
The annual rural raas-garba festival organised by the district administration for the rural parts of the district will be held this year at the Dakshin Panth School in Vyara on September 27, an official release stated. All those participating in the function have been asked to take note of the venue. At least 20 different groups, from all over the district, are expected to participate in the rural festival.

Vidya Sahayak
The office of Vidya Sahayak Samiti, Gandhinagar has asked all persons, who have been appointed for the post of Vidya Sahayak, but have not been accommodated, to contact the Samiti office and register their names. The applicants will also be required to send in another application to the local samiti office. The step is aimed at filling a number of vacant posts.

Rainfall
All 10 talukas of the district received moderate rainfall on Thursday, while Olpad and Palsana talukas recorded almost two inches rainfall in the past 24 hours, according to the district flood control room. While the water level at the Ukai dam measured 334.40 feet, the Kakrapar weir measured 158 feet.
