Parents submit memo to DEO
Parents of primary school students, led by Rajesh Desai, an office-bearer of Parents8217; association, submitted a memorandum to District Education Officer Punambhai Patel on Monday to protest against the fee hike announced by several school managements in the city, ahead of the start of the new academic session.

The parents had on Sunday morning held a meeting at Gandhibaug and flayed the announcement saying that the managements were not justified in increasing the fees.

Demolition
The Surat Urban Development Authority SUDA demolished approximately 10,000 sq ft of encroachments, mostly godowns built in Khadsad village of Kamrej taluka on Monday. These were erected without the permission of the development authority on survey plots no 33 a, 41 and 42. The Chief Executive Officer SUDA said that these godowns could not be regularised as they had violated the Gujarat Town Planning and Urban Development rules. The development authority would removed constructions in rural areas built without permission, he added.

Compensation
As part of a State government directive, two persons belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were paid Rs 1.15 lakhs as compensation by the district administration. A release issued on Monday stated that the two persons belonging to Mandvi taluka of the district were paid the compensation after it was found that they had been subjected to atrocities and were victims of oppression, according to taluka development officer M L Katara.

Seeds given
The Mandvi taluka administration gave 3,930 packets of seeds worth over Rs 14.68 lakh to small and marginal farmers of the taluka in the year 1997-98 from the zilla panchayat funds allotted for the purpose, the taluka development officer said. Among the seeds distributed or sold at minimum costs to the farmers include groundnut, tuar, jowar and other seeds. He added that half of the small and marginal farmers of the district had been covered under the scheme.

Inauguration
Mayor Navneet Jariwala will inaugurate the newly built Umra Drainage Pumping Station on Tuesday, located near Chandramani Society on the Udhna Magdalla Road. The pumping station has been built by the Surat Municipal Corporation.

MLA Dhansukhbhai Patel, Deputy Mayor Kishore Lakhani, Standing Committee Chairman Natu Patel and former mayor Fakir Chauhan will be present for the inauguration.

Foundation stone
Union Textiles Minister Kashiram Rana will lay the foundation stone for a new post office in Nanpura area of the city on Thursday. The proposed building is to be build at the Nanpura Post office Compound, opposite Dayalji Baug. Chief Post Master General, Gujarat Circle, Asha Kulkarni will preside over the function among other dignitaries who are expected to be present.
